THIS WEEK’S NATURAL PHRASE

uninvited

Shawn: How many people are coming to your party tomorrow?

Elliot: I estimate about 40 of my friends will come, but there might also be some uninvited guests from my son’s university. I hope that they behave well.

Explanation: We use the word “uninvited” to describe any sort of guest that has come without an invitation, or a pet or animal that appears suddenly. We could say “Our neighbor’s dog walked into our yard uninvited.”

THIS WEEK’S MEDICAL PHRASE

inoculate

Mrs. Smith: A raccoon bit my grandson this weekend. Do you think he’s in danger of getting any diseases?

Dr. Lamar: Well, I see from your grandson’s medical records that he was just inoculated against rabies this year, so I don’t think the raccoon bite poses any risk of rabies. But we will make sure that the area around the bite is properly cleaned.

Explanation: We “inoculate” people against various diseases. It is a similar term to “immunize” or “vaccinate”

THIS WEEK’S EMAIL PHRASE

far-fetched

Dear Morgan:

We have received a request from a client to build a new research facility in Peru. But the location is on the top of a mountain. I don’t think that the client really understands how much money it will cost to complete such a project. I think their idea is quite far-fetched.

Explanation: If there is an idea that is not well-planned, is far too expensive, or too difficult, we say that it is “far-fetched.”
